When telling people what I do for a living, I receive a varying level of responses, but often times I get "Wow! You clean up after crime scenes? How do you do it?”
Cleaning up blood after situations such as a crime scene, trauma, suicide, homicide, and body decomposition or decomp as the industry calls them, is not for the faint of heart. We come in after the police have examined the scene for a potential crime and the local medical examiners or funeral homes have removed the body. Depending on the specifics of the scene, bio-fluids could be present causing a bio-hazard, which has the potential of spreading blood borne pathogens to the person cleaning up the scene, if protective measures are not properly employed. In addition, without cleaning the scene with the proper chemicals designed to kill blood borne pathogens, there could still be a risk to anyone who comes in contact with the bio-hazard in the future. Those risks include, but are not limited to HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus), HBV (Hepatitis B Virus), HCV (Hepatitis C Virus), or TB (Tuberculosis).
Body fluids, like any liquid, can easily seep into porous surfaces and cracks in the floor and is often times ignored given only a superficial cleaning, which can produce negative consequences. If not fully removed, an odor will permeate the home until the body fluids have been completely removed and often times, we must use additional techniques such as ozone to ensure the home becomes livable again.
Although cleaning after an event such as this has always been around, it has often fell on the friends and family to clean. Nobody should have to clean-up after a loved-one’s death, which is why we want to help people on the worst day of their lives.
